Goodbye, Kip.

Anna's and my first baby, one of Wesley's two cats, Kip, or Kippy, was with us from 1997 until today. Wesley doesn't know that Kip is gone, and is his usual cheerful fearless self. Our other cat, Riley, also 10 years old, is in great health. Kippy was a wonderful, sweet, gentle cat. We will miss him badly.

Happy 16 months to Wesley!

Some of Wesley’s favorite things to do are pretend to talk on the phone to his daddy, climb onto the sofa, draw with chalk, push toys with wheels around, cuddle up with his blankets and stuffed animals, play with pretend food, lie down in the bathtub, dump all his blocks on the floor, take all his clothes out of his dresser, eat with real silverwear, finger paint with his yogurt, push his stroller, and his favorite thing of all is to play outside with mulch and rocks.

Wesley is drooling because tooth #6 is coming in. Doesn't stop him from smiling!

Wesley at the Door

When I'm in my office working, Wesley knows he can get me to stop if he presses his face against the glass and generally acts cute.

Smart Cookie

Rooster Cooster Wesley isn't using very many words, but he sure is good with hand signs, and he understands a LOT. If you ask him where any body part is, he'll touch it. If you ask him where a toy is, he'll go find it. He can understand complex sentences. He just doesn't say them himself. He's a man of action, not words, and the actions he likes are walking fast and climbing on anything that can be climbed on - not to mention jumping on the bed with his Mommy or Daddy's help - that's his favorite. He also pays more attention to long books now. But his favorite books, as well as his favorite real-world objects, all have wheels....

Banana Man

Wesley's favorite food is the BANANA. When he was little he had a toy called banana man. Now he loves them. And he loves the plastic banana at the Discovery Museum. Wesley is growing up very fast. My schedule is to stop working at 5 and have dinner and play with Wesley and Anna and put Wesley to bed.

Creative Play

All the new photos of Wes are delightful to see. I loved the series on Wes' Taxi Service and the one where he's lying on his blanket on the floor in his room! His Mommy told me he worked for some time to get that blanket through the bars of his crib and must have needed a little rest when he'd managed it! You can almost see the wheels turning in his head when he's concentrating.

Car Car Car Car

Wes loves cars, and CAR is his favorite word, and it applies to anything with wheels. We're trying to teach him to say truck and trailer and bicycle etc., but for right now it's all "CAR" "CAR" "CAR"

Birthday Letter to Wessie from Mommy

Dear Wesley,

You are the reason that March 29th is my favorite day of the year.

I used to think, before I had you, that I would love you more than anything, but that I wouldn’t be one to lose my perspective, that I wouldn’t be one of those people who couldn’t talk about anything other than their children. But now I can’t seem to utter a sentence or have a thought without you in it.

You Are One

You are one today, March 29, 2007, Wesley Neil Swanson, and 365 days ago you had not yet seen the light of day. Now you love it. Now you wake up every morning with the sun and shout your delight at being alive. You make the hand sign for light, and then you hear a bird and flap your arms like a bird. And it breaks my heart to think that the world may not be or may not stay as delightful a place as you suppose it is.

Downtown Fun

Wes has been having a great time visiting the Downtown mall now that he can get out of his stroller and walk around. He checks everything out. He loves touching the bark on trees, picking up leaves, drumming on the mailboxes and light poles, climbing up steps (with his mommy’s help), and mostly just loves having so much space to move.

Bye Bye Bottles

Today was Wes’s first day without bottles. He now drinks out of a sippy cup. He’s gone cold turkey. What a big boy!

Under The Weather

Wednesday was a tough day for Wes. He ended up having to go to the doctor’s office twice. We went in the morning about his cold. It turned out he has a virus, was running a fever, and has an ear infection.

Ca!

Wes has started saying "Ca!" when he sees a cat in one of his board books. Wes also uses "Ca" for Belle (Gum and Gup's dog) and his polar bear puppet, so he's still figuring things out. But he consi

and talk and scream and push buttons and stack blocks (sort of) and lots of new things every day. Walking is his favorite activity, I think, and he loves it so much that sometimes he tries to run - although he doesn't exactly have that down yet. He falls down a lot but gets back up, usually without any crying or anything. He walks up and down the Downtown Mall, usually holding onto Mommy or Daddy with one hand. He's walked across a soccer field, and plenty of times across the basement. It's amazing to see him walking alone now without holding onto anything. I expect that'll become normal within the next couple of weeks, and look out world!

has another tooth and is a walking machine. He can walk across a room now. The other day, I was in the bathroom and Wes was in his room. I called to him and he surprised me by walking into the bathroom.
